Hotel Snapshot

Perched on the cliffs of Ericeira, Portugal's surf capital, Aethos Ericeira is proof that design doesn't have to compete with nature to leave an impression. Just under an hour from Lisbon, this cliffside retreat trades in quiet minimalism, letting the raw Atlantic coastline do most of the talking. Set within a protected nature reserve, it's one of seven Aethos properties worldwide and one of the more compelling arguments for why the brand keeps choosing dramatic coastlines over city centers.
Design & Character

What struck me most about Aethos Ericeira is what it doesn't do. There's no overdesigned flourish, no attempt to outshine the setting; the architecture is minimalist and modern but luxurious. It blends into the landscape rather than fighting it. The hotel's sleek design, crafted by Spanish studio Astet and Portuguese architect Luís Pedra Silva, feels both modern and deeply connected to its surroundings. Every space feels intentional about staying out of nature's way, which ends up being the most memorable design aesthetic of all.
The Rooms

There are 50 rooms and suites total, so it stays intimate without feeling small. Most of the rooms and all the suites come with their own private garden or terrace. I'd steer toward one of the ocean-view categories if you can swing it; between the Superior Deluxe rooms and the Master Suites with panoramic views, it's genuinely hard to pick a bad room here.
The Food & Drink

The on-site restaurant, ONDA, was a highlight; it's built around Silver Coast seafood and clearly leans into the area's fishing-village roots, but done in a fresh, creative way rather than anything predictable. The sommelier was fantastic and took us through a tour of Portuguese wines, region by region, a great intro if, like me, you're not deeply versed in Portuguese wine regions yet.
The Amenities

The showstopper for me was the sauna and cold plunge, positioned overlooking the cliffs with sweeping ocean views; hard to think of a better setting to sit in silence than staring out at the Atlantic. There's also an outdoor pool, a beautiful gym with weights, treadmills, rowing and cycling machines, and a hammam in the spa that's open to all hotel guests. The hotel also runs regular programming, yoga classes, and local takeovers, so there's always a reason to linger in the common spaces and meet some fellow guests. And if you're traveling with a dog like I was, good news: the hotel is pet-friendly.
The Spa & Wellness

Beyond the sauna, steam room, and hammam, the spa offers deep-tissue and aromatherapy massages. One standout: a facial done in partnership with Woods Copenhagen. Wellness clearly isn't an afterthought here; it feels like the whole property was built around the idea of slowing down.
Location & Neighborhood Recs

Ericeira's coastline is made for hiking; a clifftop trail runs right along the Ericeira World Surfing Reserve, tracing the coast past Praia dos Coxos, Praia do Cavalinho, and Ribeira d'Ilhas. It's dramatic, exposed, and exactly the kind of walk that makes you understand why Ericeira's surf culture is what it is. One quirk worth mentioning: the area gets a microclimate, kind of like Southern California's marine layer, so mornings often roll in foggy before burning off.
Make time to head into Ericeira town itself, especially for dinner. Balagan is the move for sunset; grab a table, order something to drink, and just watch the orange sky do its thing over rising tides.
