Hotel Snapshot
Nestled in the hills of Bolzano, Italy, bordering on Austria, Castel Hörtenberg is a hidden boutique gem that superbly pairs the legacy of an authentic 14th century Renaissance castle with modern luxury. With just 24 suites, this fully restored 700-year-old estate is the first five-star hotel in the heart of Bolzano, providing an upscale Alpine spa retreat getaway and easy access to the famed Dolomites, in an enchanting setting that feels private and intentionally welcoming.
At Castel Hörtenberg, a new chapter began with the Podini family’s stewardship nearly two decades ago and their thoughtful restoration of the hotel in 2019. The reimagined castle, blending centuries-old stone and frescoes with contemporary Alpine touches, is an inviting oasis for guests seeking an elegant and tranquil escape, whether they’re drawn to explore the peaks of the Dolomites, revel in the storybook town of Bolzano, or indulge in a restorative wellness stay.
Design & Character
A dialogue between old and new informs the castle-luxe hotel, envisioned by co-owner Anna Podini. Think preserved relics meet current accents, like the grand entrance’s white Carrara marble portal bearing the original coat of arms and the “Laura Lou and Davide” sculptures by Bruce Catalano at the reception. Minimalist design is softened by warm Tyrolean textures, and curves echo its historic arches. Sunlight floods floor-to-ceiling windows, and the lush garden and grounds are lined with venerable cypress trees, whispering of a noble past.

The Rooms
The 24 rooms and loft suites give a feeling of calm Alpine opulence, featuring neutral tones, fine linens, curated lighting by Lichstudio, and custom furnishings by Gamba 1918 and master artisan and renowned climber Rainhard Messer. Open beam, high-vaulted ceilings accentuate spacious, light-filled interiors that reveal original restored frescoes and stuccos, while picture windows open to serene pastoral scenes of the nearby vineyards, Swiss pines, and majestic Dolomites.
The Food & Drink Situation
Dining is a journey through refined Austrian and Italian flavors. The castle’s hidden medieval dungeons have been transformed into Le Segrete, a top-tier restaurant offering exceptional regionally sourced, seasonal plates and wine pairings. Don’t miss inventive starters like Blue Cheese Mousse with Marinated Grapes and Venison Tartare and Flambéed Farm Figs and entrees like homemade Tagliolini with Black Truffle from Appiano, Alpine Trout with Valley Herb Crust, and Wild Boar Cheek in Vernatsch Sauce with Celeriac Cream, Quince, and Renon Chestnut Purée, among many other standouts.
The ancient cellar houses wine selections ranging from local to prestigious vintages, including the Podini family’s biodynamic Ampeleia label. Le Meridiane presents generous Alpine breakfast and Tyrolean lunch and dinner menus, and its signature bar serves cocktails inspired by local ingredients, like the delectable Bollicine Rosa, an intoxicating concoction with bubbles, white flowers, and Damask rose, and the Green Cooler, a nod to South Tyrol’s orchards, with a base of local apple and spicy notes.
