HOTEL SNAPSHOT

Pack your boots, we’re driving up to the Smokies in North Carolina. For travelers who crave equal parts rustic and refined, Cataloochee Ranch checks all the boxes. As a Relais & Chateaux, the hotel mixes classic ranch excitement with exceptional accommodations. This high country resort is spread through 825 acres, bordering the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Cataloochee Ski Area, and reaching 5,556 ft elevation at its peak. 

First established by the Alexander family in 1933, it was acquired by Annie and David Colquitt in 2020, proprietors of the neighboring Relais & Chateaux resort, The Swag. After an extensive reimagining, Cataloochee reopened in March 2024, marrying polished luxury with the same wild-hearted Smoky Mountain charm that’s defined it for nearly a century.

Design & Character

Taking notes from the ranches of the American West, cabins are a warm retreat to escape the city and actually get the chance to reconnect with nature, friends, and family. The design embraces the landscape rather than shielding from it; windows, porches, and gathering spaces all orient toward the mountain vistas, drawing the outdoors in. After renovations, every element was restored with care: original stones were repurposed for the fireplaces, and timber reminiscent of the old support beams was used throughout, a thoughtful homage to the ranch’s beginnings.

The Rooms

The cabins are as rustic and cozy as you imagine, with a few elevated touches to keep in mind. We stayed at the Kephart Cabin, the only cabin left using the original Chestnut wood, which leans broodier with a fireside charm, perfect for cozying up with a hot cup of cocoa. Modern comforts meet mountain nostalgia here: heated bathroom floors, a mix of vintage and new furnishings, and the kind of soft linens that make you linger in bed. Cabins are blessed with a porch facing the green expanse, where the air is crisp and pine-scented, with views of the nearby stables where horses graze in the distance.

The Food & Drink Situation

The ranch’s sole restaurant, Switchback, is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The kitchen is led by Chef Jeb Aldrich, whose European training meets Southern hospitality in all the right ways. The menu is a perfect reflection of his background, flavors, and hospitality are blessed with Southern flair, with unique ties of European Alpine influences woven within. The wood-fired pizzas are a must here, as the cheese pull alone earns its reputation. For starters, the Bread Service was a hit as options vary daily, and the Smoked Trout Dip invigorated our appetites for the next course. For entrées, the Rohan Duck and the Ribeye command attention, each cooked with the kind of precision that’s both refined and familiar. And no matter the hour, order yourself a housemade Cookie, whether it’s a classic chocolate chip, a seasonal variety, or a part of the custom ice cream sandwich. It’s golden-brown to perfection, and you’ll never be too old to dunk a cookie in some milk. (We’ve ordered a cookie to go every night because it was just that good.)

The Amenities

The amenities here lean toward the outdoorsy kind. Guests can ride horseback to the top of the property, meet the ranch’s contented cattle overlooking the valleys, or craft a handmade memento in a leatherworking class. For those who like a little competition, there’s archery, axe-throwing, and air rifle practice, plenty of ways to test your aim.

Keep an eye out for the ranch’s rotating lineup of signature events open to the public: sommelier-led wine tastings, stargazing nights with local astronomy clubs, summer cookouts, and pastry-making workshops, among them. Looking ahead, plans are underway for a pool and a few hush-hush additions expected in the coming year.

Recently, the ranch earned DarkSky Approved Lodging status from DarkSky International, and they are among the first properties to receive this designation on the East Coast, with only 10 throughout the United States. Translation: stargazing here isn’t optional, it’s part of the experience.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Down the mountain, Maggie Valley and Waynesville welcome visitors with easygoing small-town charm. Higher up, the Cataloochee Ski Area offers classic winter thrills like skiing and snowboarding, while in the warmer months, its slopes transform into trails for ATV tours and mountain adventures.

Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: I loved the porches. It was so great to actually sit and journal, having some tea and snacks in the middle of a huge open field of green. I felt more recovered than going to a spa! 

Dining: Meals from Switchback were hearty and delightful. The staff had Southern charm with great suggestions and even better conversations. Tying in local produce and Southern flair to European techniques, Switchback serves the elevated dining experience you didn’t know you could have up in the mountains.
