Florida beachfront hotels can all start to feel the same—a mirage of high-rise concrete towers, teal interiors, and beige tile floors. But the newly opened Cirque St. Armands on Lido Key in Sarasota, Florida, is anything but your typical beach tower. 

Open as of March 2025, the property underwent a complete gut renovation down to the studs. For a complete design overhaul, it looked to Sarasota’s history. 

Known as “The Circus Capital of the World,” Sarasota was the winter home of the Ringling Brothers in the 1920s. Their circus empire, one of the most popular forms of entertainment at the time, brought the family enormous wealth, making John Ringling one of America’s richest men. Today, the Ringling influence remains strong throughout the area, from the Ringling Museum of Art (home to European masterworks) to the couple’s ornate, Venetian-style palace Ca d’Zan, now a museum and architectural showpiece.

Rather than veering into kitsch with its nods to circus heritage, Cirque St. Armands takes a sophisticated, whimsical approach. So what does circus-chic look like?

The black-and-white Art Deco linework in the lobby arches around a velvet conversation pit where guests sip a signature welcome drink: a Champagne-topped, all-fruit popsicle. The aesthetic leans more Gatsby than Big Top, with striped awnings, fluted gold accents, jewel-tone flourishes, ostrich feather chandeliers, and soft carnival touches. At 5 p.m. daily, a vintage-style popcorn cart appears for a seasonal gourmet snack (like rosemary-salted popcorn).

Though it has a grown-up feel, playful touches—like spongy clown noses at check-in—keep it light enough for younger guests, too.

Part of the Opal Collection of boutique hotels, Cirque St. Armands joins three sister properties in the Sarasota area: Lido Beach Resort, Zota Beach Resort, and The Resort at Longboat Key. Guests benefit from shared amenities, including a shuttle to Lido Beach Resort’s private beach with reserved loungers and umbrellas. That said, Cirque is just steps from Lido Beach, a wide, soft-sand public stretch that feels anything but crowded.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the onsite restaurant, Ringside, a stylish space with floor-to-ceiling Gulf views. Black-and-white circus photographs line the walls, a tent-inspired stripe curves across the vaulted ceiling, and a sparkling palm mosaic spreads across the floor. Window seats offer prime sunset viewing, while velvet-draped booths deliver a cozy, VIP vibe.

For lighter bites and cocktails, guests can head to the lobby bar Midway or the poolside iteration of Ringside. The drink menu includes classics and imaginative signatures like The Magician (tequila, watermelon, lime, jalapeño extract, sea salt) and Sky High (bourbon, peach purée, lemon, and thyme).

In the guest rooms, design details strike a calming chord. Instead of circus overload, you’ll find vintage Ringling photography, fluted glass, soft gold and bronze accents, and a refreshing absence of the usual beachy teals. It’s a serene palette to return to after a day in the sun.

While winter and spring are ideal for Florida getaways, Sarasota stays active year-round. Its major cultural draws—the Ringling Museum of Art, Ca’ d’Zan, and Selby Gardens—are open in all seasons.
