Hotel Snapshot

From sandy seaside enclaves to thrumming cities like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., New Yorkers are spoiled for choice when it comes to getaways requiring little more than stuffing a weekender bag and hopping into a car. Yet, despite the countless options, many of us fall victim to routine—returning to the same spots over and over again.

While the Catskills may be well-trodden turf, one picturesque property has managed—for the time being, at least—to hover just under the radar.

Dating back to the 1800s, the 168-acre Deer Mountain Inn has a colorful history. (Rumor has it that the grounds once served as the estate of the infamous gangster, Jack "Legs" Diamond.) Since 2013, it’s been owned by Chuck and Deborah Royce, the duo behind the glamorous revival of Rhode Island’s Ocean House in Watch Hill. Their passion for breathing new life into storied properties extends to Deer Mountain Inn, from its acclaimed restaurant to the latest addition: four standalone cabins.

Design & Character

Locally based designer Iliana Moore infused the interiors with a “more-is-more” sensibility, layering natural materials like wood and stone with vintage art, taxidermy, William Morris textiles, and modern comforts, including puffy beds dressed in crisp Frette linens. Though every inch of the property has been carefully considered—even the deliberately dim lighting throughout adds to the peaceful mood—nothing feels frivolous, only deeply warm and nostalgic.

The Rooms

With just six rooms in the main lodge and four cabins, Deer Mountain Inn maintains a hushed atmosphere, even at full capacity. The accommodations nudge guests to slow down by forgoing modern distractions like in-room charging ports and motorized curtains. The cabins don’t include televisions, though one is available upon request. In short? Deer Mountain Inn encourages guests to unplug in every sense.

The Food & Drink

Situation Situated in the main lodge, the inn’s restaurant serves dinner and weekend lunch, sharing the same rich, rustic aesthetic as the accommodations. On any given night, you’ll find a mix of hungry locals, guests fresh off a day of skiing or hiking, and well-behaved dogs snoozing by the fireplace when there’s a chill in the air.

As for the food, it’s creative and hyper-local. Chef Corwin Kave, a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: New York State, prioritizes ingredients from nearby farms such as Snowdance Farm and Fromer Market Greens.

Not bound by any particular culinary tradition, Kave cooks intuitively and from the heart. The result? Dishes you’ve likely never seen before—ones that leave you wondering, “Why hasn’t this been done before?”

Take the steelhead trout, for example: a crisp-skinned fillet enrobed in creamy sunflower curry, sprinkled with toasted grains, and served with warm rice heaped with glistening trout roe. Each bite is warm, crunchy, creamy, bright, and savory—a balance of everything you crave.
