Family-owned since the 1950s, the hotel has remained remarkably true to itself, preserving the stories, traditions, and character that have made it one of Milan's most enduring addresses. It’s a true example of old-world Milanese glamour.

Design & Character

The hotel has long been a gathering place for artists, composers, curators, and business leaders alike. In fact, it was the first hotel in Milan to install a telegraph, quickly becoming the city's preferred address for global business travelers. Yet its most famous resident remains composer Giuseppe Verdi, who made the hotel his home for 27 years, something we can’t help but feel envious of. It was here that he composed Otello, and where he spent the final years of his life. That history cannot be replicated. Of the hotel's 27 suites, most are dedicated to celebrated artists, musicians, and cultural figures who once called the hotel home, each offering its own distinctive personality while honoring Milan's rich creative heritage.

Walking through the front doors, you are greeted by the decades of history and stories that have filled the hotel’s halls. The lobby feels more like a beautiful winter garden than a city hotel. A serene ‘living room’ filled with lush greenery, soft natural light, and elegant seating areas encourages guests to linger. You’ll also find this same vibe in the gym, which is surrounded by hanging plants and overlooks beautiful greenery outside.

The hotel's connection to Teatro alla Scala runs particularly deep. During World War II, when Teatro alla Scala was damaged, the hotel safeguarded costumes, artwork, scripts, and treasured pieces from the opera house's collection. When the theatre reopened in 1946, it gifted several of these works to the hotel as a gesture of gratitude. Today, those paintings, original scripts, and memorabilia remain proudly displayed throughout Don Carlos, giving every meal an added layer of history.

The Rooms

The hotel feels very lived in, in a good way. The interiors strike a balance between classic Milanese elegance and understated luxury. Recent renovations by Dimorestudio preserve the hotel's historical integrity while introducing a contemporary layer through rich textiles, antiques, parquet floors, and beautifully restored architectural details. For the guestrooms and suites, each one is completely different, though a common thread remains the individually selected antiques and rich furnishings, like an incredible tapestry or painting hanging above your bed.

Start the evening with an aperitivo at Gerry's Bar, a timeless Milan institution where chic locals gossip, before making your way to Caruso Nuovo for elevated Italian classics or Don Carlos, a tribute to the great Maestro Verdi, where dining is surrounded by original costumes, paintings, and memorabilia gifted by Teatro alla Scala.
