HOTEL SNAPSHOT

Occupying a storied thirteenth-century palazzo directly on Piazza Santa Maria Novella, Grand Hotel Minerva. In fact, it is so close to the basilica’s marble façade that Florence feels almost theatrical in its immediacy.

Within the hotel’s walls, 97 rooms and suites present refined sanctuaries for travelers drawn to beauty, history, and intellectual depth. After all, the hotel’s concept is rooted in continuity: a place that has welcomed monks, aristocrats, Grand Tour explorers, and now, contemporary aesthetes seeking an authentic Florentine immersion.

Design & Character

Few hotels can claim design authorship as significant as Grand Hotel Minerva’s. Its defining chapter was carved in the late 1950s by Maestro Carlo Scarpa, in collaboration with Edoardo Detti, when modernity was introduced with reverence rather than rapture.

Scarpa’s interventions–clean lines, poetic spatial gestures, and bespoke furnishings–continue to coexist seamlessly with frescoed ceilings, medieval beams, and coffered rooms dating back to the 1300s.

Throughout the palazzo, an exceptional private art collection unfolds, featuring works by Emilio Greco, Giuseppe Chiari, Renato Guttuso, and Carlo Carrà. The hotel is akin to a living archive of Italian artistic thought.

The Rooms

Each room feels composed rather than decorated. Intimate guest rooms open onto unforgettable views of the “Cradle of the Renaissance,” while select unique accommodations preserve original frescoes and centuries-old architectural details.

Suites offer greater scale, including duplex layouts, and expansive family solutions for longer stays.

Across all categories, curated Italian furnishings, contemporary comfort, and a quiet sense of narrative define the stay, allowing guests to sleep within history without sacrificing 21st-century ease.

Food & Drink

Mornings begin in a Scarpa-designed breakfast room overlooking a Japanese garden, where Tuscan produce, house-made pastries, and a dedicated vegan selection are arranged beneath walls lined with Giuseppe Chiari’s works.

La Buona Novella channels Florentine culinary tradition in a light-filled space facing the piazza, while the Bistrot Bar nods to the palazzo’s monastic past with Tuscan-inflected cocktails inspired by ancient distillation processes.

Crowning the hotel, La Terraza is the city at its most cinematic: a rooftop pool and bar offering handcrafted cocktails, unobstructed views of the Duomo, and evening pizzas, open seasonally from April to October.

Amenities

A panoramic fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment is available by reservation, as is the calidarium–an ancient Roman-inspired hot plunge pool, open during cooler months.

Above all, the heated rooftop pool remains an emblem of the property.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

From Grand Hotel Minerva, the city effortlessly unfolds on foot. The Duomo, Medici Chapels, Via Tornabuoni, artisan workshops, and the Arno are all within minutes.

Cafés, galleries, and historic wine bars animate the surrounding streets, making the hotel a front-row seat to the action. Be sure to visit the historic apothecary, Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, renowned for its luxurious perfumes, skincare, and herbal remedies.
