Set The Scene

From the bustling streets of Tribeca to a 250-year-old Japanese farmhouse: That's what’s in store for guests at Shibui Spa at The Greenwich Hotel. Dark and atmospheric, the spa is a world away from the Manhattan streets just outside its doors.
The showpiece is a lantern-lit swimming pool beneath the roof of a historic wood and bamboo Japanese farmhouse. The structure was reconstructed inside the hotel by Japanese craftsmen, some of whom hold the prestigious title of Living National Treasure. It's a spectacular setting that pays homage to Japanese craft and tradition.Showy, it’s not.
In fact, the Japanese word shibui refers to a kind of beauty that's understated yet rich, with an appreciation for natural materials and simplicity. The spa embodies that philosophy with warm wood, soft lighting, and a divine birch scent that adds to the sense of calm.
The intimate space has five treatment rooms, including one dedicated to shiatsu, a traditional Japanese bathing room with a large soaking tub, and a wet room for body wraps and scrubs. There's also a relaxation lounge to luxuriate in pre- orpost-treatmewnt.
The spa's menu draws on healing traditions from around the world- Japan, India, the West and beyond. But the one that caught my attention was the Omakase, Shibui's signature massage, which takes the Japanese concept of entrusting yourself to an expert and applies it to bodywork.
The Treatment

I've had more massages than I can count, but the Omakase at Shibui is definitely not your usual deep-tissue or Swedish session.
Rather than following a set sequence, the treatment caters to your needs and is designed around your therapist's expertise. Depending on who's working on you, the session might incorporate everything from cupping and hot stones to dry brushing, poultices, acupuncture, and other therapeutic techniques.
My therapist, Jean, specializes in craniosacral therapy, a gentle, hands-on technique focused on releasing tension. She combined it with shiatsu, deep-tissue strokes, stretching, and heated packs, moving between modalities throughout the session.
They all wove beautifully together. The deep tissue work tackled stubborn knots, while the stretching and shiatsu helped release tension in areas I hadn't realized were tight. The craniosacral work brought another dimension to our time together and left me profoundly relaxed.
Overall, my morning at this Tribeca wellness destination was decompressing and reviving all at once and was a therapy for my body and mind. And believe me, I’ve had enough massages to know when one is really great like the Omakase I had at Shibui Spa.
