Why it works

Hotel Snapshot

Just outside Salamanca, Hacienda Zorita Wine Hotel & Spa occupies a former 14th-century Dominican monastery with a long history of famous guests. According to hotel lore, Christopher Columbus spent time here in 1487 while working to secure royal backing for his expedition across the Atlantic. Today, the property has been transformed into a secluded wine-country retreat along the Tormes River, where everyone is welcome.

The hotel invites guests to relax, unwind, and indulge in top-rated regional wines and award-winning cuisine at the on-site restaurant, Zorita's Kitchen. History is everywhere here, from exposed oak beams and centuries-old stone walls to arched passageways and simple furnishings that complement the architecture. The rooms feature oak, terracotta tiles, wrought iron, and skeleton keys instead of plastic keycards.

Design & Character

Guests are immersed in Hacienda Zorita’s history from the moment they step onto the property. Everywhere you turn, you’ll find exposed oak beams, centuries-old stone walls, arched passageways, and simple furnishings that complement the architecture. The rooms feature oak, terracotta tiles, wrought iron, and skeleton keys instead of plastic keycards.

Exploration is encouraged, with paved pathways lined by grapevines throughout the property and a tranquil seating area overlooking the Tormes River.

The Rooms

The 40 rooms and suites at Hacienda Zorita are spread across the property for an intimate feel. Many traditional rooms are located in the main three-story portion of the monastery, while larger, family-style suites occupy separate smaller buildings.

Opt for a Deluxe Room or Signature Suite in Casa Grande, the main building, with a view of the Tormes River for the most historical experience.

The Food & Drink

Zorita's Kitchen, the hotel's on-site restaurant, is not only where hotel guests dine but also a local favorite for celebrating special occasions. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner, sourcing many of its ingredients locally or harvesting them directly from the property. The Iberian ham croquettes are a must-have appetizer, and the mini-tomahawk steak with chimichurri is perfect for steak lovers.

End the night with a cocktail or glass of wine from the bar just outside the doors of Zorita’s Kitchen.

Amenities

Hacienda Zorita has a handful of standout amenities, including a complimentary buffet breakfast full of local Iberian ham, pastries, and fresh fruit, plus wine tastings, a cheese room, and farm-to-table dining.

The oldest building on the property houses the spa. Inside the eighth-century water mill are treatment rooms, a lounge, and a hot tub overlooking the Tormes River. Many treatments use grapes and olive oil.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Valverdón is a 25-minute drive from downtown Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Golden City because its sandstone buildings glow in the evening sun. The city dates back to the third century BC and is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe. The hand-carved stonework on building facades throughout downtown Salamanca is truly astonishing and never gets old.
