Inside Casa Tenue, a Porfirian-Era Townhouse That’s Now Mexico City's Most Underrated Stay

A restored 1904 Roma Norte townhouse turns eight art-filled suites, copper tubs, private terraces, and an old stone basement into a hushed urban home.

Casa Tenue is an eight-room house-hotel just off Plaza Río de Janeiro, designed to feel less like lodging than a beautifully restored Roma Norte residence.

Hotel Snapshot

The 1904 Porfirian-era townhouse has previously served as a private home, art studio, community center, and artist residency.

Its scale, domestic circulation, and quiet atmosphere make it unusually residential for central Mexico City.

Design & Character

Architecture studio Vertebral and interior firm Habitación 116 preserved stone and historic structure while introducing limestone-washed chukum and contemporary Mexican art.

Gallery Ñú curates an evolving program that makes the hotel feel like a private collection rather than a decorated lobby.

The Rooms

Eight named suites combine stone, wood, built-in window seats, and copper soaking tubs. Some tubs sit outside on landscaped private terraces.

A ground-floor suite has its own courtyard, while the Desierto and Teo penthouses offer the most private outdoor space.

Food & Drink

A light breakfast includes pastries from nearby Panadería Rosetta. For lunch and dinner, Rosetta, Máximo Bistrot, Em, street food, and many of Roma Norte’s strongest restaurants are within easy reach.

Spa & Wellness

There is no spa or gym. Wellness is built into the rooms through soaking tubs, quiet reading corners, private terraces, and the neighborhood’s walkable plazas.

Amenities

The stone-basement breakfast library functions as dining room, lounge, reading room, and coworking space. Wi-Fi, breakfast, evening alcoholic drinks, luggage storage, and tea and coffee are included.

The Neighborhood

Casa Tenue is near Plaza Río de Janeiro and less than fifteen minutes on foot from the Ángel de la Independencia, with Chapultepec and Museo de Arte Popular also accessible.
