Built in 1853, The Douglas is a 16-room boutique hotel in downtown Savannah, Georgia, rated 5 stars and priced from $450 per night. The discreet adults-only property on Oglethorpe Avenue boasts a raw bar and restaurant next door helmed by two-time James Beard Award semifinalist chef Jacques Larson.

Design & Character at The Douglas

Original pinewood floors, restored and rewired Murano chandeliers, and fireplaces in every guest room preserve The Douglas’s historic character. Room No. 5 showcases the thoughtful mix of old and new, while vintage ice buckets—some salvaged from the former hotel, Ballastone Inn—add another layer. The common areas feature custom upholstery by Savannah’s Taylor Upholstery and art curated by the owner. Charleston designer Kirby Caldwell led the interiors.

The hotel has 16 uniquely designed rooms, all with king beds and capacity for two guests. The hotel has plans to expand to 22 rooms, with work underway. Original fireplaces, white flowy curtains, cozy sitting areas, and Parisian-style balconies overlooking Oglethorpe Avenue’s Spanish moss-draped Southern live oaks give the rooms a breezy, European feel. Serene bathrooms feature Aesop products, bath bombs for soaking in the oversize tubs, and white-tiled floors.

The hotel offers complimentary gourmet breakfast, while the guest-only bar, the Drawing Room, is open daily from 2 to 10 p.m. Each evening, the Parlor lays out a spread of canapés, charcuterie, and cheeses, giving guests the opportunity to nibble and socialize.

Next door, Lester’s is a dark, moody, nautical-themed, French-leaning raw bar and restaurant with a small menu featuring tinned fish and seafood towers. Standouts include the smoked fish piled with dill, charbroiled oysters with pimento butter and pickled green tomato, a baguette from local baker Sixby with whipped Banner Butter, and a perfectly balanced chocolate pot de crème. For an ideal cocktail pairing, go for the Love Me, Hate Me, Drink Me, made with rum, cilantro, green chile, and lime. The server described it as a mojito with cilantro instead of mint, but we found it more herby, fresh, green, and zingy, with just the right amount of sweetness.

The Amenities at The Douglas

The Parlor is the main gathering space for lounging, reading, or working. Beyond that, amenities are simple. Craving a massage? The front desk can help arrange that for you. Bikes are also available for guests, which are a fantastic way to explore the surrounding town.

Location & Neighborhood Recs at The Douglas

The hotel sits near Bull Street in Savannah’s Historic District, close to its famous squares, with Broughton Street shopping, Bay Street, River Street, and The Olde Pink House all within walking distance. Also nearby: the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace Museum, Husk, Leopold’s Ice Cream, and Municipal Grand, where you can’t go wrong with a tiny martini and shoestring fries nightcap. You can walk to bars, restaurants, museums, parks, and the river. Bring comfortable shoes—sidewalks and cobblestone can be uneven.
