There are beautiful hotels, and then there are the ones you find yourself quietly planning a return trip to before you've even checked out. Isabella's Llafranc falls firmly into the latter category. Set directly on the waterfront in one of Costa Brava's prettiest seaside towns, Isabella's Llafranc feels less like a hotel and more like the beach house you've always wished belonged to a stylish friend. The atmosphere is relaxed but thoughtful, polished without ever feeling precious. Wake to the sound of waves, wander downstairs for breakfast overlooking the sea, spend afternoons exploring hidden coves and coastal paths, and return in time for sunset negronis or rosés on the terrace.

Perfect for couples seeking a romantic Mediterranean escape, it's equally suited to friends or, as was the case on my last stay, mothers and daughters looking for a long weekend by the sea.

Design & Character

The first thing you notice is the color palette. Warm white walls are punctuated by sunshine-yellow striped towels that immediately signal you've arrived somewhere designed for holidays. There are playful nautical touches throughout, including a charming half-boat feature on arrival at reception, while curved walls, sloping ceilings, and soft natural light create a space that feels sensual, comforting, and almost underwater.

Nothing feels over-designed, yet every detail appears carefully considered. From the iconic blue bottles of Solán de Cabras water awaiting guests on arrival to the warm textures and relaxed Mediterranean styling, Isabella's strikes that elusive balance between chic boutique hotel and welcoming private home. A beautiful bar, an evening fireplace for the cooler months, and a long communal table for those traveling solo are all part of the charm.

The Rooms

The Deluxe Suite is worth seeking out. Spacious and beautifully appointed, it's the sort of room that encourages you to linger a little longer each morning, namely because of the balcony I can’t seem to tear myself away from each time the sun appears.

The standout feature is undoubtedly the bed, which ranks among the most comfortable I've slept in anywhere on the Costa Brava. But the real luxury is opening the balcony doors at night and falling asleep to the sound of the waves, with the same delight waiting for you come morning.

Bathrooms are equally impressive, with a generous soaking tub perfect for winding down after a day spent exploring coastal trails and nearby villages. Though, I must admit, after spending so much time in the ocean on these weekend breaks, I’m usually just washing the salt off in the shower before heading downstairs to explore a restaurant or bar after a day in the sun.

The Food & Drink

Speaking of which, one of Isabella's greatest strengths is that the restaurant is every bit as compelling as the hotel itself.

For breakfast, you can expect strong coffee, traditional Spanish tortilla, pan con tomate, and beautifully prepared fresh fruit with yogurt.

Come evening, the menu delivers a polished take on Mediterranean favorites at Isabella’s own restaurant. Standout dishes include the Mini Steak Tartare with Foie, the Parmigiana di Melanzane, Grilled Scallops with 'Nduja Sofrito, and the Cappelletti Chilli Crab. Save room for dessert. While there are a handful of excellent options, for me, the pistachio gelato is non-negotiable.

Amenities

The greatest amenity here is arguably the setting itself. Step outside and you're immediately immersed in the rhythms of Llafranc. If you find yourself wanting some activities, head out on the paddleboards that the front desk can organize for you.

The team is consistently warm and knowledgeable, with concierge recommendations that make exploring the wider Costa Brava effortless. On sunny days, my guess is you'll likely find little reason to venture far. The beach sits directly in front of the hotel, while cafés, boutiques, and tapas bars are all within easy walking distance. Whether you’re looking for a beachside shop for postcards and a newspaper or a more considered store for that take-home accoutrement, you’ll find it along this coastline.

Should the weather turn, the charming inland towns of the Costa Brava and the more varied shopping streets of Begur are only a short drive away.

Spa & Wellness Scoop

There's no elaborate spa program here, but wellness is woven into the experience in a more organic way.

Between slow mornings spent sipping coffee on your balcony, swims before breakfast, or unhurried walks along the coastline, guests leave feeling more relaxed than when they arrived.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Llafranc may just be one of Costa Brava's most charming seaside towns. But one of the area's highlights is the spectacular coastal path connecting Llafranc with neighboring Calella de Palafrugell. Hugging the cliffs above sparkling Mediterranean waters, the walk is scenic enough to raise your heart rate but gentle enough to remain firmly in holiday territory.

For dinner beyond the hotel, don't miss Margarita's in Palafrugell, a local favorite and one of my most anticipated reservations whenever I'm in the area.

And for those willing to venture slightly further afield, Begur's boutiques and hilltop charm make for the perfect half-day excursion.

Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: Falling asleep to the sound of the Mediterranean and waking up to it again. The balcony rooms have the sea so close it feels like part of the hotel.
