Naturally, when you book a flight to Italy, there’s little risk involved. Why? Because stepping into the small ‘capital’ of the Salento Peninsula, Lecce—nestled in the Apulia region—can completely redefine your travel expectations. Once you set foot in a city that uncovers layers of 17th-century Baroque architecture, spectacularly designed churches, limestone-clad buildings, and ancient ruins that whisper of a time long past, you may find it hard to find any other destination that will make you audibly ooh and aah. And now there’s even more reason to visit: Palazzo Zimara.

Set on the Via Giuseppe Libertini, this historic 16th-century Baroque palace was originally built in 1557 as the residence of philosopher Teofilo Zimara. Restored frescoed walls, original cobblestone floors, and arched entryways create a marvelous setting to unwind in. The hotel’s 16 rooms are just as elegant and showcase some of the stewards of contemporary European design: illuminated closets created by DA A Italia, sofas by Natuzzi, leather-upholstered beds by Salotificio Scatigna, and furniture by Barba Arredi.

After four years of painstaking renovation, the latest addition to the D’Angelo Family Collection has everything you need right in the historic center. Created by a family originally from Matera in nearby Basilicata, owners of Villa Mojana, Il Palazzotto Residence & Winery, and Francesco Radino Winery (the company that has taken over as steward of the historic hotel), entrusted architect Raffaele Centonze to reimagine the spaces while still preserving its architectural heritage. 

During my stay, I was particularly drawn to the distinctive layout of each room, which added an extra dose of quirk and character. What’s more, design runs through every detail naturally. The frescoed walls and two-level shower in the Deluxe Wellness room made it feel intimate and cozy; a wonderful, rare perk. Breakfast on my private balcony or relaxing in the peaceful rim room were also added bonuses. The Zimara Suite, a spacious 100 m² boudoir, is another highlight featuring all sorts of luxurious amenities, including an in-room Jacuzzi, private sauna, double bathroom, and a separate living room for those seeking extra space. 

Given that the family produces organic wine in Matera and the products are locally sourced, the property is also a dining and wine destination in its own right. A caffè Leccese, the region’s typical iced coffee, is the best way to start the day in the peaceful courtyard, for its kick as well as its flavour. The bistro’s outdoor terrace is another must for people watching and drinking Palazzo Zimara’s “Susumaniello Puglia” wine. 

In the evening, the restaurant serves plates that land with the intimacy of home cooking as well as the precision of fine dining. It’s an inventive menu, which stars a good spread of pasta, meat, fish, and vegetarian options. Think fresh pasta “stones” stuffed with burrata and steamed sea bass with peas. It was strikingly rich and full of flavour.
