If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into a real-life period drama (Bridgerton, anyone?), The Royal Crescent Hotel & Spa is the place to do so. As much a part of Bath’s history as the city itself, this hotel sits in one of the most famous Georgian buildings in the United Kingdom. Built in 1775 by well-known architect John Wood the Younger, the Royal Crescent was initially designed as a row of 30 Palladian-style townhouses. With its signature curve and very grand design along the River Avon, it quickly became one of Bath’s most famous landmarks—and eventually landed its well-deserved title as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, the hotel sits right in the middle of the crescent, welcoming guests to be a part of its history.

Speaking of history, The Royal Crescent has had quite a past. It started as a set of upscale townhouses before turning into a guesthouse in 1950 and eventually a full-fledged hotel. By the 1970s, the hotel got a major makeover, bringing it back to its original charm. These days, its Palladian façade is as captivating as ever, stretching 538 feet and earning its name as one of the hands-down best examples of Georgian architecture around.

While this hotel might be home to history, it’s been thoughtfully updated with all the modern touches a five-star destination should have. Inside, it balances timelessness and luxury with ease. The 45 rooms and suites are charming and comfortable—think antique fireplaces, high ceilings, and elegant decor, plus large, comfortable beds and sleek marble bathrooms. Some rooms look out over the hotel’s gardens, while others have views of the famous Crescent. Our favorite? Room 8, of course, which sits right in the middle of the hotel and overlooks the rolling green lawn. However, no matter which room you get, each one is exceptionally special. 

The real standout here, though, has to be the hotel’s spa. Along with a full range of treatments (including massages and facials), there’s also a 12-meter heated pool, vitality pool with massage jets, Himalayan salt-infused sauna, and eucalyptus-scented steam room. For the ultimate relaxation, be sure to unwind in The Taittinger Spa Garden, a quiet green space where guests can enjoy a glass of Champagne in the sunshine.

When it comes to drinking and dining, the on-site restaurant Montagu’s Mews hits all the right notes. Head Chef Martin Blake brings his love for fresh, seasonal ingredients to every dish, whether it’s from the à la carte menu or the classic tasting menu. Additionally, there’s something for every time of day, from breakfast and lunch to multi-course dinners, and of course, afternoon tea (which should not be missed). Think freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, a range of delicious sandwiches, and a lovely assortment of pastries. The tea menu is just as impressive, featuring classic blends as well as some unique ones (the hotel’s signature green tea blend is a must-try), all perfect for pairing. If a more relaxed setting is what you wish for, the outdoor terrace is calling your name.

As for the best part of the hotel? Alfie, the beloved resident cat. Alfie’s journey started in 2017 as a “Friendly Neighborhood Cat,” but he quickly rose to fame as the unofficial “Guest Relations Manager.” These days, he’s a regular around the hotel, often looking for guests to pamper him with pets. He’s made such a name for himself that he even has his own spot in the lobby—Alfie’s Bar—where guests can enjoy a drink in his honor. 

Whether cheers-ing to Alfie, enjoying the grounds, or simply resting in your room after a long day exploring Bath, The Royal Crescent offers everything a history, luxury, and travel buff could dream of.
