With a name that says it all, Sanctuary Camelback Mountain is that indeed. A retreat set against Camelback Mountain’s iconic red-rock backdrop, this stay redefines Arizona luxury. What began in the 1950s as a private tennis club has evolved into one of the state’s most iconic resorts. The property has been reimagined into something modern yet grounded. Despite being just minutes from downtown Scottsdale, it feels completely removed from city life, an escape that is calm but not sleepy and luxurious but never pretentious. Whether for a weekend reset or a full retreat, this is the Arizona desert at its most refined.

Design & Character

Sanctuary’s design is all about quite literally blending in. The low-slung buildings are tucked into the mountain, built with stone and wood that match the desert colors around them. The look is modern but relaxed, with soft, sun-faded tones that make sense in Arizona. Pathways wind between cacti, bougainvillea, and palm trees, leading to quiet parts of the property. The jagged mountain, desert hues, and architecture all flow together.

The Rooms

The rooms are designed for privacy and relaxation, with layouts that make the most of the mountain views. There are 110 casitas and suites spread across the property, each tucked into its own corner of the desert. Warm wood finishes, neutral tones, natural stone, fireplaces for cooler evenings, and bathrooms with deep soaking tubs or rain showers keep the interiors polished but unfussy. Private patios and terraces are standard, ideal for coffee at sunrise or wine after sunset.

For something more private, the mountainside villas are hard to beat. With full kitchens, private pools, and panoramic terraces, they are made for longer stays or special occasions.

The Food & Drink

Dining at Sanctuary is reason enough to book a stay. The resort’s signature restaurant, Elements, is a Scottsdale favorite known for creative seasonal menus and floor-to-ceiling views that make every meal feel special. The menu leans fresh and locally inspired, making it a strong stop any time of day.

Right next door, Jade Bar has some of the best views in the Valley, especially at sunset. The space is open yet intimate, perfect for handcrafted cocktails and light bites. Table XII takes private dining further. Tucked beside Elements, the intimate space seats up to 14 guests and looks into the open kitchen through sliding glass doors. Guests can choose a prix-fixe dinner or work with the culinary team on a custom menu.

The Amenities

For those who like to stay active, there is plenty to do. The fitness center is fully equipped and offers daily yoga, Pilates, and strength classes, along with guided hikes up Camelback Mountain. There are also five tennis courts, four pickleball courts, and three pools, including an infinity pool overlooking the valley.

Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s former winter home, is about 25 minutes away. For nature, head to the Echo Canyon Trailhead or the Desert Botanical Garden. After dark, Platform 18 in Phoenix offers a speakeasy inside a 1920s Pullman-style train car. Sanctuary’s location lets travelers dip into Scottsdale’s scene and return to calm quickly.
