There are places that announce themselves, and others that seem to reveal themselves slowly. Tamodi belongs to the latter. The road winds away from Plettenberg Bay and into the greener, quieter landscape of The Crags, where dense forest gives way to open valleys and distant mountains. By the time you arrive, the town feels much farther away than it really is.

Pulling up to the gates of Tamodi on the gravel road, it almost feels as though you have stumbled across a space between Africa and the wider world. A gold buggy whizzes up to collect your luggage and place it in your room while you settle into the perfectly layered manor house.

Everything here encourages a softer pace. The air smells of trees and damp earth, horses graze beyond the lodge, and the light changes gently across the valley throughout the day. There is no pressure to do very much. A morning might begin with breakfast overlooking the hills, drift into a walk through the estate, and end with a glass of wine beside the fireplace.

Tamodi is polished, but never precious. Its luxury lies in silence, space, and the feeling that the outside world has briefly fallen away.

Design & Character

Tamodi feels less like a hotel and more like a beautifully layered country home. The interiors are world-class and tactile, with exposed timber beams, stone floors, linen, woven fabrics by exceptional South African artisans, and handcrafted carpets created in collaboration between local makers and the Studio Ashby team. Handcrafted furniture and a palette borrowed from the surrounding landscape complete the setting. It also boasts an art collection curated by Reservoir, allowing the design, art, and landscape to flow together. Tamodi is an education in the very best of Africa and the world.

Large windows and wide terraces draw the eye outside, while fireplaces, deep armchairs, and a tucked-away reading library create a sense of intimacy indoors. I have only ever experienced anything quite like Tamodi at Meadowood in Napa Valley.

The details are quietly memorable: outdoor showers, weathered wood, and decks positioned for long, uninterrupted views. Nothing feels overly styled. Instead, the architecture seems to settle naturally into the land around it, while the interiors balance international and local influences with a world-class nod to design and craft.

The Rooms

The rooms are generous, calm, and designed around the view. Accommodations include mountain-facing suites, a detached nature cottage, and private plunge-pool suites, which is where we stayed. Standard Mountain View Suites measure approximately 45 square meters, while the Deluxe Mountain View Suite and detached cottage offer around 75 square meters of space.

The Premiere Plunge Pool Suites are the ones to book for a more private escape. Each has its own pool and broad outdoor deck, with views stretching across the valley toward the mountains and, on clear days, the distant ocean. Inside, king beds, natural fabrics, fireplaces, deep baths, and indoor-outdoor bathrooms make the rooms feel both grounded and indulgent.

The Food & Drink

Breakfast is the main ritual at Tamodi, and perhaps the meal that best captures the mood of the estate. It is served slowly, with views over the valley and a menu centered on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, along with what can only be the most famous fudge I have ever experienced.

The pastries and cakes taste as though the world’s best nonna has been baking through the night. There is so much heart and flavor.

There is some magic in lingering over coffee here, watching the morning light move across the landscape while the rest of the estate remains still, except for polo ponies training in the distance in their grand arena.

Tamodi is not a conventional restaurant hotel, but private tastings and tailored food-and-wine experiences can be arranged. For dinner, the team can recommend nearby restaurants. Enrico’s at Keurboomstrand is a local favorite for seafood, generous plates, and tables overlooking the ocean.

Amenities

Life at Tamodi is organized around the landscape. Guests can swim in the infinity pool, walk through the estate alone or with a knowledgeable young guide, book a massage, join a winery excursion, or arrange a tailored introduction to polo suitable for all levels.

The horses give the property much of its character and grandeur. Even for guests who do not ride, such as myself, their presence creates a gentle rhythm: the sound of hooves, movement in the paddocks, and riders crossing the estate in the distance.

There are also quiet lounges, a library, fireplaces, private decks, Wi-Fi, parking, housekeeping, concierge assistance, and airport transfers.

The best amenity, however, may simply be the space to disappear for a while, along with the level of luxury found in the property’s layers and subtle touches.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

Tamodi is set along Pinehaven Road in The Crags, a rural area east of Plettenberg Bay, close to Keurboomstrand and some of the Garden Route’s most beautiful natural attractions.

The setting feels wonderfully removed, yet beaches, restaurants, wildlife sanctuaries, and forest walks are all within easy driving distance.

Nearby places worth seeking out include Arch Rock Beach, Nature’s Valley, Monkeyland, Birds of Eden, Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation & Awareness Centre, and the shops and cafés at Old Nick Village, including the family-run Mungo mill.

Plettenberg Bay Airport is approximately 25 minutes away by car, depending on traffic.
