Oysters, Caviar, and Picnic Baskets: How Luxury Hotels Are Redefining Breakfast

By Stacey Leasca

As the saying goes, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And that goes double for a vacation.

There are few pleasures sweeter than either sauntering down to an awaiting hotel breakfast, coffee already made, pancakes at the ready, or even better, simply sitting up in bed and calling downstairs to have it delivered right to you. For me, it's the epitome of the vacation experience, as it's one little thing someone else can do for me, rather than having to do it myself.

A good hotel breakfast is a moment to savor. And when I asked our community to share their most unforgettable ones, I wasn't surprised that dozens of people jumped in with their favorites. However, what did surprise me was how many different shapes an "unforgettable" breakfast can take.

Take Cap Rocat in Mallorca, where breakfast doesn't come to your table. It's set down on your daybed. "Just fill out the menu card, order as much of everything as you want, set a time—any time—and they will bring it," writer Isabelle Kliger said of her experience at the fortress-turned-hotel's private, in-room-style service overlooking the bay of Palma. As a bonus, the resort's falcon patrols the sky to keep gulls away while you eat.

At The Setting Inn in Newberg, Oregon, breakfast appears in an adorable picnic basket outside your door, ready and waiting for you to devour. "Waking up to a flaky, buttery Bouchon Bakery croissant spread with jam, a hard-boiled egg, and some just-squeezed OJ, all without having to change out of my robe? Sold!" writer Karla Walsh said.

And at Ibiza Gran Hotel, breakfast is less of a single dish and more of a performance. Here, the daily spread runs more than 350 dishes deep, with roaming mimosa, oyster, and caviar carts and live Spanish guitar in the garden, ensuring you're never hungry, thirsty, or bored. "No matter how late you stayed up the night before, the Grand Breakfast is always worth getting up for," the hotel's F&B Director Carlos Sanchez said.

One more not to miss, according to reporter Sarah Rappaport, is Borgo Santandrea on the Amalfi Coast, which she called "the best coffee and croissant of my life."

Though journalist Olivia Bria said that, for her, Fausto by Andean in Lima is best-in-class. Here, she said, the five-room hotel's open kitchen turns breakfast into a personal show. "The breakfast room is in a stunning, quiet nook in the center of the hotel, decorated with greenery," Bria explained.

"Each breakfast comes with meats, cheeses, fruits, and pastries/bread. The specialty isn't the standard breakfast itself—it's the chef just on the other side of the counter of the open-concept kitchen who's continually making items from scratch, like smoothies based on the fruits of the day and eggs."

And at Porto's Villa Foz Hotel and Spa, they serve oysters and Veuve Clicquot at breakfast, which editor Jessi Walker called "an overall perfect experience, 10/10." Vienna's Hotel Altstadt earned high praise from East End Taste editor Vanessa Gordon, who would go back for the eggs Benedict alone. And in the Maldives, journalist Rosie Bell still dreams about a "lick-the-plate great" glass noodle dish from LUX* South Ari Atoll's breakfast buffet.

And really, to me, all this means is that I need to add a few more overnight flights to my travels this year, just so I get there by breakfast time.

Tennis Courts Worth Traveling For as the US Open Kicks Off

Well, well, well, if it isn't the U.S. Open season once again. Time for New Yorkers to cosplay as tennis fanatics, and for the real die-hard fans to fly in, hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite pros while trying not to sweat under the end-of-summer sun.

Flushing Meadows, the U.S. tournament’s home, has fast, grueling blue hard courts; however, the tennis world extends far beyond Arthur Ashe Stadium to other courts covered in traditional red clay, with dust flying as players slide and white sneakers turning rust-orange by the final match, and simple, hard courts in peaceful mountain landscapes.

While stepping onto a Grand Slam court might not be on your calendar starting this Sunday, a tennis court sanctuary is far more attainable than you think. Here are three U.S. boutique spots with picture-perfect courts, practically beckoning beginners and pros alike to pick up a racquet.

High Hampton
High Hampton

This Blue Ridge Mountains haven proudly features four Har-Tru courts, framed by postcard-worthy mountain peaks and dahlia flowers. High Hampton offers traditional, understated luxury with impeccable service and activities such as tennis, golf, and swimming. No matter your skill level, don’t let playing on these courts intimidate you—they’re made for forgiving, casual play. The intoxicatingly crisp mountain air keeps your energy high during the match, and if that doesn’t convince you, maybe a post-match cocktail on the front lawn will. Plus, for all the tennis junkies, these courts carry a celebrity element—High Hampton is home to a top-tier racquet program that’s been developed under the direction of former World No. 1 Andy Roddick.
The Parker Palm Springs
The Parker Palm Springs

Hidden beneath towering palms, Parker Palm Spring's terre battue red clay courts transport you straight to the French Riviera. Pairing Judy Kameon’s lush landscape design with Jonathan Adler’s signature aesthetic, the setting couldn’t be more impeccably styled if it tried. The vibrant red clay pops against the desert backdrop, complemented by a courtside “Lemonade Stand” that serves spiked refreshments straight to your bench. You’ll (hopefully) forget about the desert heat and instead lose yourself in a setting that feels distinctly Cannes-adjacent.
INNESS
INNESS

It seems upstate New York is going head-to-head to win the country-club aesthetic match against the Hamptons. INNESS, a Hudson Valley retreat, approaches the world of tennis through a minimalist lens, relying heavily on Scandinavian design that feels in tune with the rest of the hotel. Surrounded by the Catskill Mountains, the property makes it hard to sit still. The no-fuss hard courts complement the rolling hills for an idyllic backdrop between hits—one that feels quietly confident and refreshingly devoid of traditional tennis pretense. Win or lose, at least these courts are guaranteed to photograph well.

By Lindsay Cohn

East Coast elites have a certain cachet, captured in books, depicted on screen, and seen IRL in privileged zip codes. Not one of them? That's OK. Travelers who want to cosplay as prestigious Connecticut boarding-school alums can try a polo or label-less cashmere cardigan on for size during a weekend getaway.

Located in aristocratic enclaves like Newport and Cape Cod, New England’s best boutique hotels sell the fantasy of inherited wealth, prestige, and legacy. With oil portraits, club chairs, maritime heirlooms, croquet, and cocktail hours giving off “we’ve been coming here forever” vibes.

The Boutique Hotel We're Obsessed With—La Valise Los Cabos

By Ruby Gregg

Hotels Above Par image

If Cabo’s neon-lit megakid-resorts make you want to sprint in the opposite direction, this is your antidote. Hidden down an unpaved road on the raw edge of Baja’s East Cape, La Valise turns the wild coastal landscape into a architectural preserve.

La Valise is Baja done brilliantly—artisanal mezcal on tap, prime whale-watching from your private deck, and completely unfiltered coastal indulgence.

With just 10 private suites, the boutique sanctuary leans hard into elemental luxury: custom artisan details, stone and adobe textures, and expansive sea-facing terraces where you can fall asleep to the crash of the Sea of Cortez. From the moment you arrive, the property captures the intimate, easygoing vibe of your friend's private hacienda estate.
