Hotel Snapshot

Most people know Elk Rapids, if they know it at all, as the gentle bend in the road between the Traverse City airport and wherever they're actually headed in northern Michigan. The Dexter Hotel is placing a bet as the bend itself being the destination.

Opened in May 2026 in a modular building a short walk from the water, this 29-room property was assembled around a single, almost stubborn idea: that nearly every object in it—the bed you sleep on, the lamp you read by, the cup your coffee arrives in—could be made by a Michigan hand.

Quick note on the guest experience: the Dexter operates on a light-touch, tech-forward model—you check yourself in digitally, and the front desk keeps limited hours rather than the round-the-clock concierge the word "boutique" tends to promise. Come for the craft, not the turndown service.

Design & Character

Here's the context the hotel is quietly counting on you to know: Michigan didn't just make mid-century modern furniture, it more or less invented the American version of it. Herman Miller came out of Zeeland; Grand Rapids called itself Furniture City for a reason; And at Cranbrook, outside Detroit, a single hallway's worth of students and teachers—the Eameses, Eero Saarinen, Florence Knoll, Harry Bertoia—went on to design the century. The Dexter plants its flag in that lineage.

The property itself was reimagined by Daniel Caudill—formerly the creative director of Detroit's Shinola—with his Kinship Hospitality partner Kamron Bijeh-Apple. Custom white oak anchors the rooms; copper and warm metals do the work at the bar and reception desk. The palette is muted and durable, chosen to age rather than date.

And the design choices are staunchly Michigan-forward: the lighting built in Traverse City, the ceramics thrown by Traverse City potters, the wallpaper, millwork, and drapery all made in-state.

The Rooms

The rooms are minimalist in a good way. Expect muted tones, natural materials, and soft upholstery. Beds are handcrafted Serta mattresses dressed in down and Frette linens; the ceramics on the shelf (bowls, trays, a soap dish, a lamp) were made for the hotel, too. There's a small kitchenette setup in the rooms—a holdover from the building's apartment-style layout.

Food & Drink

I didn't eat or drink my way through the Dexter, so I can’t comment on the F&B experience, but Noble Lounge, the ground-floor gathering spot facing the water, was open and filled with guests during my stay. The bar was stocked and it seemed like a great place to gather after a long day out on the lake or in the town.

The restaurant, helmed by Executive Chef John Korycki, serves up shareable small plates leaning on Northern Michigan farms and producers along the bar’s cocktail list and house beer made with Arbor Brewing in Ann Arbor. As of right now, the Noble Lounge is open Wednesday through Saturday, if experiencing the menu is a must-have on your itinerary.

Amenities

Bath products come from Salt & Stone, and a custom Kinship scent runs through the public spaces. There's a covered parking area (free for guests), a communal living room, and a patio that puts you within an easy stroll of the marina, the beach, and downtown.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

From the Dexter you're within a few minutes' walk of the Elk Rapids Marina and public beach, the 1940s-era Elk Rapids Cinema, and a cluster of independent coffee, wine, and beer spots. Traverse City and its wineries (40-plus across the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas), Sleeping Bear Dunes, and the National Cherry Festival are all within reach, which is really the pitch: the Dexter as a quieter, design-minded base camp for a region that's getting busier by the year.

I highly recommend Umbo and Farm Table in Traverse City, and making the trek over to Sleeping Bear Dunes for some hiking and awesome sightseeing (and if you go to the famous Big Sleeping Bear Dune, only go down if you think you can get back up—it costs nearly $3,000 to get airlifted back to the top).
