Why it works

Most first-timers headed to Rome seek out a hotel near the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, or the Colosseum. Once travelers finish the inaugural sightseeing blitz and return to the Eternal City for a second, third, maybe even fourth time, it becomes abundantly clear there’s so much more to Italy’s capital than its most famous sites.

Tucked inside a 1970s building in Parioli, an upscale district a bit further from the historic center, The Hoxton, Romeis a stylish and smart (read: great value) base for a Roman holiday that’s removed from the swarming crowds, but easy enough to reach the tourist maelstrom by taxi or foot. After a day of snaking queues to enter major landmarks, you’ll be happy to return to a more low-key environment with far fewer selfie sticks.

Fans of The Hox will recognize some familiar trademarks such as communal spaces that encourage hanging out and clever quirks. The cool kid brand has a portfolio of boutique hotels, from Shoreditch, Amsterdam, and Paris to Williamsburg and DTLA—all are chic and comfortable but have unique destination-specific charm. What sets the Rome outpost apart is the aesthetic, which draws inspiration from mid-century Italian design with a sprinkle of modern styling and a relaxed, of-the-moment atmosphere. Looks wise, it’s a mashup of local marbles and terrazzos, wall paneling, statement-making sofas, and vintage Murano glass lamps. Rather than adhering to a particular palette, the bold colors exhibit a creative zest that defies trends.

The informal lobby feels more like a living room. The sun-dappled outdoor terrace invites lingering. The all-day café is the perfect spot for espresso and pastries or to dig into a porchetta sandwich for lunch. Locals and out-of-towners chat during aperitivo at the buzzy bar. When the sun goes down, the cocktails continue flowing

and Elio churns out delicious Roman dishes like veal tonnato and house-made tagliatelle with bolognese ragout.

Upstairs are 192 bedrooms, which range in size from “Shoebox” (ideal for budget-oriented solo travelers) to “Biggy.” Expect parquet floors, lacquered wood, plush headboards, and brass fixtures. Bathrooms are compact in a cute and efficient way with lovely tile, pedestal sinks, and showers stocked with signature Blank products.
