Nestled in the heart of Adams Morgan—one of D.C.’s most diverse and vibrant neighborhoods— is a hotel unlike anything else in the nation’s capital. Located in what was once a 110-year-old church, The LINE D.C. emphasizes the history and diversity of D.C. in one of the most unique settings imaginable, and with its consistently lauded dining concepts, it’s a must-see for visitors and locals alike.

The facade of the LINE D.C. immediately reveals its history as a house of worship. Austere yet grand columns and a neoclassical staircase welcome guests to the hotel, which is often used by neighborhood denizens as a meeting or coworking space. Hospitality is clearly at the forefront of the LINE ethos as guests pass through several dining concepts (including a coffee shop, bar, and restaurant) on their way to the elevators that will ultimately take them to their rooms.

Those rooms are distinctively homey, evoking a nostalgia for simpler times. Floors are wooden, the art is original (from local female artists), books are plentiful, and the decor is almost religiously simple, in the best of ways. Being at the LINE feels almost alarmingly like being in your friend’s house, without pretense or expectation, making it a thoroughly welcoming and enjoyable stay. Of course, if you opt for one of the hotel’s 1,200-square-foot suites, it’ll feel less like your friend’s home unless your friends are in very high places. One of our favorite touches lies in repurposing some old church furniture—don’t be surprised if you find a pew hiding in plain sight.

Once you’re refreshed and ready to explore, there’s no better place to start than the LINE. The influence of the former church is also laid bare in the beautiful Mezzanine level of the hotel, where stained glass windows surround vaulted ceilings and leather, wood, and marble accents. We’re particular fans of the Mezzanine Alcove, an intimate private dining room that overlooks the entire interior of the hotel.

While Adams Morgan has more than its fair share of fabulous dining options, the LINE itself holds a strong candle to the competition, given its fabulous on-site dining program. At the heart of the hotel lies No Goodbyes, an all-day neighborhood hangout that draws inspiration and resources from the farmers, fishers, and small-time ranchers in the Chesapeake Bay and mid-Atlantic. We also love a daily happy hour, which No Goodbyes offers from 3 to 5 pm.

When you want to actually move beyond the four walls of the hotel, you can do so via LINE’s fleet of Priority Bicycles, available to take out for a few hours or for the day to explore not only Adams Morgan but D.C. as a whole. If you’re looking for exercise on a more local level, check out the LINE’s hotel gym, which is so popular that it actually offers monthly memberships for locals as well.
