Hotel Snapshot at The Marlo Solvang

Between its small-town charm and transportive Danish architecture (complete with a couple of authentic windmills), Solvang is one of California’s most distinct destinations. Though there are several upscale hotel options in the surrounding Santa Ynez Valley, staying near the downtown village is most convenient for travelers wanting to walk from tasting room to tasting room during a weekend away in Santa Barbara wine country. Just a couple of blocks away from the heart of town sits a newer boutique hotel called The Marlo. This recently refurbished property features 24 bespoke rooms and suites across a cozy motel-esque layout. The accommodations are simple yet thoughtful, and amenities range from outdoor firepits to a communal game room.

Danish accents and retro details flood the entire property. Don’t expect a traditional lobby upon arrival—instead, the Marlo keeps things old-school with a small innkeeper-style office where you pick up an actual key to your room, rather than an electronic card. Out front, a large courtyard space serves as the property’s focal point, where guests sip wine around a firepit or catch up over morning coffee and a cream cheese pastry from The Solvang Bakery.

Contemporary interiors with neutral tones, curated artwork, and clean textures hide behind nostalgic wooden doors. Each of the 24 rooms is completely unique, but they all follow a similar style that leans minimalistic. From smart TVs and mini kitchens to in-room electric fireplaces, the amenities are simple yet satisfying. The Solstice King Suite is the most elegant room, featuring vaulted ceilings and bright, airy windows, but for a fun surprise, book the Skal Sanctuary King and embark on a mission to find the secret entrance to a small yet swanky hidden chamber.

There is no on-site dining or food and beverage program, but The Marlo is within walking distance to all of the best restaurants in town. Some of my favorites include Coast Range (go for the steaks, stay for the signature savory poptart), Mad & Vin, and Michelin-recommended Peasants FEAST. Solvang is also famous for its unique concentration of wine tasting rooms, and while every palate seeks something different, I highly recommend popping by the new Analogue Room vinyl lounge for some good tunes, a rotating selection of local wines, and focaccia-style pizzas.

The Amenities at The Marlo Solvang

King Saud's 1943 art-deco residence, Saudi Arabia's first reinforced-concrete building, is becoming a 79-key ultra-luxury hotel. French designer Tristan Auer and architecture firm Aedas led the transformation, adding private butlers, seven event spaces, and five restaurants among the amenities. The opening date has moved more than once (originally 2025, then April 2026, most recently "late 2026"), so treat the timeline as fluid until the property confirms a firm day.

Situated right along Alisal Road, The Marlo is conveniently located within walking distance of everything in downtown Solvang. Think wine tasting rooms, Danish bakeries, curated boutiques, vintage stores, restaurants, and more. However, those wanting to branch out and explore other parts of the valley should definitely consider visiting Michelin-starred Bell’s in Los Alamos for lunch, followed by a glass of wine at Bodega. In Los Olivos (which is just about 10 minutes from Solvang), stop by Bar Le Côte for a round of oysters and a crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc before stopping by tasting rooms like Dragonette Cellars or Story of Soil for more vino (you are in wine country, after all).
