Down a dirt road where local herders tend sheep, goats, and cows, Mihir Garh emerges from Rajasthan’s Thar Desert like a mirage. The five-star hotel resembles a fortress, with rounded edges, open fireplaces, alcoves, and a sand-colored exterior drawn from nearby villages.

The Relais & Châteaux stay feels secret with only nine suites. Inspired by the fortresses of India’s Maharaja era, each suite pairs handwoven kilims, embroidered cushions, homespun rugs, horse-shaped lamps, and warm color schemes with a private Jacuzzi or plunge pool.

An infinity pool appears to vanish into the desert. Beside it, the restaurant serves traditional dishes such as raan, spice-crusted roast lamb, while lanterns and a star-heavy sky transform dinner after dark.

The surrounding villages are central to the experience. Horseback riding and the signature Village Safari introduce guests to regional craft, clay architecture, pastoral life, and the communities that give the landscape its character.

After a day of riding or exploring, the spa offers muscle-soothing treatments. The result is a remote stay that combines extravagance with a strong sense of place.
