Hotel Snapshot

Rome is filled with grand hotels, but very few feel genuinely personal. Tucked away on a quiet street overlooking the Quirinale Palace, Villa Spalletti Trivelli offers something increasingly rare: the feeling that you've been invited into someone's private home, because until not long ago, that's exactly what it was. A former noble residence turned into a 17-key hotel.

Design & Character

The story begins in 1895, when the Spalletti Trivelli family purchased what was then simply a large park overlooking one of Rome's most important landmarks. Construction on the villa began the following year and was completed in 1901. More than a century later, remarkably little has changed. Still owned by the same family, the villa has been meticulously preserved, with each generation acting more as caretaker than renovator. It wasn't until 2004 that the family opened their home as a hotel, allowing guests a glimpse into a way of Roman living that few ever experience. Today, the property is owned and managed by siblings Andrea and Raimonda Spalletti Trivelli, the fourth generation of the family, who grew up in the villa.

Every salon, sitting room, and corridor of the property has been preserved with extraordinary care. Original sofas remain exactly where they have for generations, surrounded by family portraits, tapestries, chandeliers, and antique furnishings. Even the layout reflects the villa's residential roots. Each floor houses just six guestrooms, and they're all interconnected, allowing an entire level to be reserved as a private residence for families or groups. A nice reminder that this was never designed to be a hotel; it simply evolved into one.

As Andrea often says, "The best compliment we can get is when a guest takes a nap on the [living room] couch. This is a place where you can easily forget that you aren't at home... and we really encourage guests to use the villa as their home."

The library is perhaps the villa's greatest treasure. Home to more than 5,000 books collected by generations of the family, it's the type of room you could happily lose an afternoon in. At its center hangs an extraordinary map of Rome dating back to the 1700s, quietly reminding guests just how much history these walls have witnessed.

Even the wine tells the family's story. Produced at the Counts Spalletti Trivelli's organic Pomario estate in Umbria, the bottles served throughout the villa make aperitivo feel less like hotel service and more like being welcomed into the family's home.

The Rooms

Each of the 17 rooms has its own personality, filled with antique furnishings, elegant textiles, and residential touches that make it feel as though you've borrowed a room in a grand Roman home. Some overlook the villa's gardens, others the Quirinale, but all feel wonderfully lived in. Some ‘rooms’ are large enough to be classified apartments.

The Amenities

That philosophy extends to every corner of the house. Last year, the family unveiled the new Caschera SPA, transforming the site of the ancient Baths of Constantine into one of Rome's most thoughtful wellness experiences. Inspired by centuries-old Roman bathing rituals, guests can enjoy treatments ranging from wine therapies honoring the family's Pomario winery to rituals incorporating the ancient strigil once used in Roman bathhouses. Complete with an indoor pool, Finnish sauna, Turkish bath, and serene relaxation spaces, it feels like a natural extension of the villa's history. The rooftop, meanwhile, is one of Rome's quieter luxuries, with sun loungers and panoramic views across the Eternal City's rooftops, the perfect place for an aperitivo.

Its location couldn't be more historic. Directly opposite sits the Quirinale Palace, once home to the Popes from the 1600s until 1870, later the residence of Italy's kings, and today the official home of the President of the Italian Republic. As the sixth-largest palace in the world, it anchors one of Rome's most elegant neighborhoods, yet somehow, Villa Spalletti Trivelli remains wonderfully under the radar.
