First things first: let’s address the inevitable question of why Hotels Above Par is reviewing a W property. Yes, the brand is part of hospitality giant Marriott International—the antithesis of the intimate, design-forward boutique stays we typically champion. But the W Budpaest is nothing like a cookie-cutter chain hotel. Instead, it has a distinct point of view and a strong sense of place, capturing the spirit of what HAP is all about.

The bigger picture is that W is undergoing a major brand overhaul. The brand is shedding its early aughts party label and leaning into a chicer, more luxurious, grown-up identity. Think sharper service, led by plugged-in, welcoming staff, and a full lifestyle approach that covers wellness, food, and drinks for both visitors and locals alike.

W Budapest is one of the standout showcases of this shift. Set on Andrássy Avenue, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the hotel is housed in the restored Drechsler Palace, once home to the Institute of Ballet. It’s a showstopper—easily, in my opinion, the top place to stay in town.

Design & Character

W Budapest is stylish to a hilt. Interior designers Bowler James Brindley, from London, and Bánáti + Hartvig, from Hungary, have woven a narrative that draws on the building’s former lives as a café, social hub, and Hungarian State Ballet Academy. Expect metallic mesh details, rich green, coral, and deep-blue palettes, and striking stained-glass moments. Budapest’s chess fixation gets its due, too, with bespoke chess-piece lamps and monochrome tiled marble flooring. Mirrors that create optical illusions are a fun, clever detail.

The Rooms

The 151 guestrooms skew residential, mixing historic architectural bones with modern flair. The look is bold—hint of Faena—and shifts depending on the room: some highlight warm wood and original ceilings, others go more avant-garde or monochrome. My suite upgrade came with a roomy lounge area, oversized windows, pops of turquoise, and a large bathroom with double sinks.

Food & Drink

Three buzzy venues hit the mark in delivering W’s dining and imbibing. Nightingale by Beefbar- yes, of the Beefbar brand fame- is the signature restaurant and features a menu heavy on Asian flavors. As expected, beef is the headliner, but vegetable-forward dishes and seafood (especially sushi) hold their own. Standouts include the crispy carpaccio with chipotle dressing and the yellowtail sashimi finished with a yuzu–truffle sauce. I also tucked into hearty entree salads for lunch and look forward to the daily breakfast spread, which includes fresh fruit, eggs of all kinds, local cheeses and meats, and so much more.

Just across the space, the bar at Nightingale by Beefbar mixes cocktails and pours spirits and local wines. For a late-night vibe, the basement speakeasy, Society25, draws the city’s cool crowd for conversation, cocktails, and a memorable after-hours scene.

Amenities

W’s new life puts wellness front and center, and in Budapest, that means a tricked-out gym and daily fitness and yoga sessions. And the subterranean AWAY spa is much more than an afterthought, with its great massages and body treatments. If you’re short on time, the Quick Fix menu gives you speedy feel-good treatments without the commitment.

Location & Neighborhood Recs

You couldn’t ask for a better base. During my three-day stay, I walked everywhere- the Hungarian Parliament Building, St. Peter’s Basilica, the historic Central Market Hall, the bank of the Danube River, Budapest’s famous ruin bars, and a string of museums, boutiques, and art galleries. The city is literally at your fingertips here.
