Located in downtown Anchorage, the Wildbirch Hotel marks several milestones. It’s the city’s first major hotel opening in 20-plus years, and Alaska’s first JdV by Hyatt property—a perk for travelers who book with World of Hyatt points. It’s also the first lifestyle-focused hotel in downtown Anchorage.

But beyond these firsts, the Wildbirch heralds something bigger: the gradual, steady revitalization of downtown Anchorage.

Despite arriving well after 1:00 a.m., I had no doubt I was in the 49th state. Vintage fly-fishing rod cases adorned the front desk, while a colorful, hand-painted taxidermy salmon by fourth-generation Alaskan artist Romney Dodd hung near the fireplace. Even the columns, which could easily have been left bare, were wrapped in Indigenous-inspired patterns. Across the property, the design balanced warmth and utility.

My room, one of 252 spread across the hotel’s three floors, felt like a fun, cozy camp for grown-ups, with playful design touches—such as the oversized wood headboard depicting Denali’s topography and colorful paintings by local artist Ted Kim—alongside practical features, including a cherry-red mini fridge and multi-tasking corner banquette.

Steps from the Duomo on Via de' Martelli, this 30-room couture hotel opens inside a 16th-century palazzo built by the Martelli family, complete with a monumental nymphaeum fountain attributed to Baccio Bandinelli and frescoes by Luigi Catani and Antonio Marini. Hotelier Andrea Cecchi and designers Elena and Giulia Sella led the restoration, using powder blue, sage green, and brass, with onyx bathrooms and in-room "Press for Champagne" buttons. There's a secret-garden restaurant (Segreto), a rooftop with Duomo views (Sotto le Stelle), a wine library with a hidden vault, and a spa running on Biologique Recherche. Need we say more?

The Amenities at the Wildbirch Hotel

The fitness center is modest, but gets the job done. But since you’re in Alaska, you’ll likely spend most of your time in the great outdoors.

The Wildbirch is a convenient jumping-off point for your Alaskan adventures, whether you’re flightseeing local glaciers with Rust’s Flying Service, spotting coastal fjords and Alaskan wildlife aboard Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery Train to Whittier, or trying your hand at salmon fishing at Ship Creek.

Plenty of restaurants are within walking distance. A city institution since 1957, Club Paris serves classic steakhouse fare—order the onion rings with extra housemade ranch on the side—alongside stiff drinks. A 2026 James Beard finalist for Outstanding Bakery, Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop is Anchorage’s go-to for rustic loaves made with ethically and locally sourced grains, plus massive scones. At Whisky & Ramen, chef Mike Dodge pairs piping bowls of ramen, including the chickeny Sugamo Star elevated with yuzu and black truffle, with smooth Japanese whisky.
