Long before Hawaiʻi became a state in 1959, Hāna-Maui Resort (now part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt) was already welcoming travelers to one of Maui’s most remote corners.
Established in 1946 as Kaʻuki Inn by San Francisco businessman Paul Fagan, the six-room retreat offered a luxurious respite in a town whose economy was still reeling from the decline of its once-thriving sugarcane industry. Eight decades later, the property retains its original spirit of seclusion, with 66 rooms, suites, bungalows, and residences spread across 75 acres of tropical landscape.
This year marks the Hāna Highway centennial. Completed in 1926, the winding coastal route transformed access to East Maui, connecting communities that had long been isolated by the island’s rugged terrain. Today, the drive remains as much a rite of passage, with cascading waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and dense rainforests rewarding those willing to brave its curves.
At the thoroughfare’s eastern end, Hāna-Maui Resort offers something increasingly rare. The surrounding town is refreshingly unpretentious, with a food truck park, neighborhood shops, and Hāna Ranch Restaurant contributing to the laid-back rhythms of everyday life.

Upon landing in Honolulu, opt for a 20-minute private Cessna flight, which reveals Maui’s dramatic coastline and waterfall-dotted interior from above. Once on the ground, guests are picked up in Hāna-Maui Resort-branded Jeep Wranglers and driven a short distance to the tropical paradise.
Forget the polished uniformity of a conventional luxury resort. Hāna-Maui feels more like a collection of island homes; expect wicker furnishings, plenty of wood paneling, and artwork evoking Polynesian history, all of which contribute to a nostalgic interpretation of old Hawaiʻi.
The Rooms at Hāna-Maui Resort

Each accommodation encourages a gentler pace, from intimate garden-view rooms to spacious oceanfront bungalows. Interiors balance island-inspired details with understated comforts. Private lanais (patios) invite guests to sip morning coffee amid the trade winds while taking in the verdant grounds or Pacific Ocean. Those seeking extra room to unwind should book one of the suites and bungalows, which boast more generous layouts and plenty of privacy.
The most memorable in-room amenity, however, may be what’s missing: televisions and clocks are noticeably absent from guest rooms. Such a thoughtful detail truly cements the meaning of “island time.”
The Food & Drink at Hāna-Maui Resort

For such a remote destination, the F&B scene at Hāna-Maui Resort is surprisingly robust.
Overlooking Hāna Bay and the slopes of Kaʻuiki Hill, The Restaurant is an all-day concept with seasonal fruit, locally caught fish, and island-grown vegetables. Enjoy breakfast dishes here every day, like Mochiko pancakes, papaya yogurt bowls, and traditional Loco Moco. Don’t skip the Hāna Sunrise: there’s no more delightful way to start the day than with coconut and banana-sweetened coffee.
Across the street from the resort, Hāna Ranch Restaurant is a casual local haunt serving ahi poke, fresh-catch fish sandwiches, and hearty entrées with ingredients sourced from Maui farmers, ranchers, and fishermen. The recently opened Paniolo Bar brings a contemporary cocktail sensibility to Hawaiʻi’s paniolo (cowboy) heritage, while the Pool Bar keeps things easy with endless Mai Tais beside the Pacific-facing infinity pool.
The Amenities at Hāna-Maui Resort

Two swimming pools, a yoga cabin, an open-air fitness center, and a three-hole pitch-and-putt mini golf course offer low-key ways to spend an afternoon. Jeep rentals allow guests to explore the surrounding coastline and countryside. The spa is a welcome respite after days spent hiking and sightseeing.
Nature enthusiasts will find the resort particularly well positioned for excursions into nearby coastal preserves and parks. Others may prefer to stay put, alternating between the pool, a restorative treatment, and an especially long lunch. Either way, the luxury lies in having nowhere else to be.

The road to Hāna officially begins in Pāʻia, on Maui’s north shore, and winds eastward toward the resort. Starting from the end of the highway provides a perspective like no other.
Drive towards the beginning, making time for plenty of stops at various mile markers. Waiʻānapanapa State Park is essential for its striking black-sand beaches, volcanic formations, and sea caves. Refuel at Hāna Farms with a piece of their beloved banana bread or a Hawaiian pizza pie. Browse the whimsical grounds of the Garden of Eden Arboretum, and spectate surfers and sea turtles at Ho’okipa Beach Parl.
Be sure to snag a dinner reservation at Mama’s Fish House, a seafood institution celebrated for its daily catch and Polynesian-inspired décor, which sits at the entrance to the town of Pāʻia. For a cultural evening activity, book The Lūʻau at Grand Wailea. Seashell leis, hula lessons, traditional Hawaiian storytelling, and Polynesian performances span an elaborate feast; the evening concludes with a climactic Samoan fire-knife dance. Afterwards, head to Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa (named for Hawaii’s official state fish with a pig-like snout) for a nightcap at its striking wraparound aquarium bar, where tropical fish glide past guests sipping tiki cocktails.
The real lesson of the Hāna Highway’s hundredth anniversary is that the journey need not be rushed; it’s an invitation to experience a side of Maui like no other, where the destination is every bit as memorable as the drive.
