At the mouth of Montenegro's Boka Bay sits a 19th-century fort, surrounded by water and reachable only by boat or helicopter. For decades it was a ruin nobody quite knew what to do with. A diligent, years-long restoration changed that, turning it into a 32-room retreat, and Banyan Tree has since folded in its own spa rituals and service style. The arrival sets the tone: guests are let onto an island that happens to have a fortress on it, long before anything resembling a front desk enters the picture.
Design & Character
Curved stone ramparts and a circular tower wrap around a glass-roofed courtyard, and the renovation team clearly wasn't interested in competing with the masonry—vaulted ceilings, reclaimed timber, walls thick enough to keep rooms cool without much help. Brass fixtures, neutral linen, and locally made ceramics fill in the gaps without dressing up what's already there.
The building's history doesn't get smoothed over for the brochure. General Lazar Mamula built the fort in the 1850s to guard the bay's entrance for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During WWII, it held Italian prisoners. Then came decades of nothing, just salt air and collapsing stone, until someone decided the place was worth saving. Weathered surfaces and original stonework remain visible throughout the building, and an on-site museum lays out that arc for guests who want it, from the fort's military origins through its wartime years to the restoration itself. Every other detail of the stay, from the first greeting to nightly turndown, is handled with the same intention.
By day, three pools and a private beach carry the calm energy. Once the sun goes down, candlelit dinners along the ramparts shift the mood to something even quieter.

The Rooms
Thirty-two rooms and suites, each one quite different. Sky Suites live in the tower itself: stone walls, solid oak, natural fabrics, about 1,012 square feet, sea views built in as standard. Panoramic Suites claim the tower's crown, with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and private terraces, stretching to roughly 1,313 square feet, designed as a modern take on a utopian retreat. Junior Suites sit lower in the fort, in what used to be the cannon rooms. Only eight Adriatic Balcony Rooms exist, tucked near the fort's center and wrapped in greenery, smaller at about 495 square feet but bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows that run straight to the water.
Food & Drink
Four venues cover the island's meals and moods. Parasol sits inside the fort's circular walls next to the three pools, open all day for Mediterranean and seafood-driven dishes. Kamena runs the full day too, from breakfast through a late dinner, built around the region's seasonal harvest. Celeste takes the island's edge, an open-air terrace for relaxed lunches and golden-hour dinners with an international, fusion-leaning menu. And after dark, Pinea Mixology Bar, low-lit and tucked away, serves cocktails at a marble bar for anyone looking for a quieter nightcap.

Wellness
The Banyan Tree Spa runs two treatment rooms and a couples treatment suite, plus two ritual rooms for guests going deeper into the program. Finnish and herbal saunas, a steam room, a halotherapy room, and a floating tank cover the more restorative end of things. A fully equipped gym and instructor-led yoga, breathwork, and sound healing classes round it out for guests who want to stay active rather than just still.

The fort sits exactly where the Bay of Kotor meets the open Adriatic, inside a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Luštica Peninsula and its Blue Cave are a short boat ride away, along with the coastal village of Rose. On the water, guests get kayaks, paddleboards, and water bikes; on land, e-bikes cover the peninsula's trails and wilder stretches of coast.
