The mahjong revival is in full swing. It’s now fashionable to play across nearly every demographic, from 80-year-old grandmas who’ve played for decades to Gen Z newbies. And now, the centuries-old parlor game has made its way into boutique hotel lobbies. Mahjong events and amenities invite players to disconnect from screens, learn a new hobby, shuffle the tiles, and socialize with traveling companions, other guests, or the local community. Bowie House, Auberge Collection, hosts weekly mahjong nights in the Billet Room, the hotel's stylish take on a classic game room, where The Mahj Club instructor Amanda Mosley leads introductory lessons, fueled by cocktails and chatter about strategy. Mahjong is such a huge part of San Francisco culture, especially within its large Asian community. Over the summer and through September, The Jay, Autograph Collection hosted “Martinis & Mahjong” in partnership with Mister Mahjong, Andrew Keeler, a fun way for new and seasoned players to connect. Upcoming events are in the works. TBD on dates. Kimpton recently launched a complimentary “Mahjong & Mingle” amenity at properties across the globe—from the Kimpton Pittman Hotel in Dallas to Kimpton Da An Hotel in Taipei and Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok. Guests can request a mahjong set—including tiles created by artist Lulie Wallace, dice, a game mat, a pusher, and a rack set—and printed instructions at the front desk, then set it up in their room, by the pool, or in the lobby living room. While you’d expect evenings at The Pridwin to revolve around s’mores and sundowners, on summer Sundays, the Shelter Island charmer swaps seaside nostalgia for “Mahjong & Martinis”—an evening of mastering the game with instructors from Hampton’s Mahj while sipping craft martinis by Dante.
